Eligibility Criteria

Requirements for Earning the NACD Directorship Certification™

To become certified, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • NACD Membership. You must be a current NACD member.

    • NOTE: All NACD members are eligible.

  • NACD Foundation Course prerequisite. Before taking the certification exam, you must take NACD Director Professionalism®. If applicable, you will be prompted to register for your Director Professionalism course through the Certification application process.

NOTE: Exceptions exist that allow you to bypass the NACD Director Professionalism® course and go right to the exam. These include:

  • Directors who have previously taken:

    • NACD Director Professionalism®, in person or online

    • NACD Advanced Director Professionalism

    • NACD Master Class or

    • The NACD course "From Battlefield to Boardroom."

(NACD recommends selecting Director Professionalism as a refresher if the foundation course was completed before January 2017).

OR

  • Directors who have served on a public company board for three or more consecutive years (within the last five years)

OR

  • Directors who have served on the board of a private company with more than $250 million in revenue for three or more consecutive years (within the last five years)

OR

  • Directors who have served on the board of a nonprofit company with more than $250 million in revenue for three or more consecutive years (within the last five years)

Once you have completed your foundation course, or meet the exceptions and become eligible to take the exam, you will have six (6) months to schedule and prepare for the exam. You will be provided instructions on scheduling your exam once you've completed your application and paid. If you do not meet the foundation course prerequisite, you may select an upcoming course during the application process.
