In the 2018–2019 proxy season, 77 percent of all newly-elected public company directors had never before served in that capacity.
That means that a staggering three out of every four new public company directors were taking on this leadership role for the very first time. In the two previous proxy seasons, that number was 54 percent.
The other reality is that directorship continues relentlessly to increase in complexity.
If directorship ever was simply an ad hoc responsibility, it no longer is. Today, directorship is a true profession—and it demands the right knowledge and the right skills set.
By setting industry standards that everyone can agree on, NACD Directorship Certification™ will not only provide a strong foundation for future directors, but also help today’s directors to grow and elevate our profession into the future.
As the expectations of board members continue to expand at an incredibly rapid pace and require significant knowledge and perspectives to add strategic value to the enterprise, the NACD certification program will give existing and prospective directors an advantage to showcase their leadership to investors and relevant stakeholders.
